IEF: Preventing Blindness and Restoring Sight in the Developing World

The International Eye Foundation's Seeing 2000 program— launched in 1995— has helped prevent blindness through eye exams and the treatment of more than 200,000 children in 13 countries. Pictured above are Nepalese children awaiting their eye exams. Our blindness prevention and sight restoration programs help people like this everyday in the developing world.

A child facing a life of blindness just breaks your heart. “Blind children have so many challenges and become a substantial burden on their families and community” notes Dr. Judy Newman, a senior pediatric ophthalmologist from Texas who travels the world sharing her skills and expertise. In April, she visited Asmara, Eritrea, a tiny country in the horn of Africa surrounded by the Red Sea, Sudan, and Ethiopia with a population of only 3 million, but with more than its share of children facing blindness.[ Read More ]

Dr. Larry Schwab's 4th edition of his very popular text for general and eye health workers is now available in African and Asian versions. The new Chapter 2, "Sustainable eye programs" written by IEF describes our approach to sustainability programming.

Honored for Contributions to Saving Sight

The 2007 IEF “Promotion of Peace and Vision” awards were presented to James P. Ganley, MD, DrPH and former Ambassador Guillermo Castillo of Guatemala at a dinner hosted by Taiwan’s Representative to Washington, DC and Mrs. Joseph Wu at the magnificent Twin Oaks estate. Our sincere thanks go to Rep. and Mrs. Wu, their staff, and event chairs Cyd Miller Everett and Julia S. Hopping for making the evening such a success.
